One Quick Visit, Lifelong ID: When to Microchip Your Puppy or Kitten

Puppies sprint like they’ve discovered electricity. Kittens treat countertops as summit peaks. With all that momentum, it only takes a second for an “inside-only” pet to slip into the wide world. That’s where microchipping steps in. At Low Cost Veterinary Surgery Center of Mesa, we recommend microchipping early as a practical, high-value way to protect your newest family member.

The Right Age to Start

Most puppies and kittens can be microchipped safely at 6 to 8 weeks old. This timing lines up neatly with early wellness exams and first vaccines, so it can be done during a visit you’re already planning. The procedure is quick and feels similar to a routine injection, which young pets typically handle with ease.

Beginning early means your pet has permanent identification before their curiosity starts opening doors, literal and figurative.

What a Microchip Is and Isn’t

A microchip is a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, placed just under the skin between the shoulder blades. It does not track location and does not need a battery. Instead, it carries a unique ID number. When a clinic or shelter scans your pet, that number pulls up your contact information from a secure registry.

Think of collars and tags as the front door sign. A microchip is the foundation poured beneath the house. It stays put, no matter what.

Why “Sooner” Beats “Someday”

It’s easy to push microchipping down the list while you juggle training, feeding schedules, and sleep. The problem is that most lost-pet moments are unplanned. A visitor forgets to latch a gate. A loud noise sparks a dash for the exit. A carrier isn’t fully zipped.

Microchipping early closes that window of vulnerability. If your pet is found, there is a direct path back to you from day one.

The Appointment, Step by Step

No surgery. No anesthesia. During a routine exam, a trained team member places the chip using a sterile applicator. It takes seconds. Many pets react no more than they would to a vaccine, and they are back to normal activity right away.

Before you leave, your team will walk you through registration so the chip is connected to your current contact details.

Indoor Pets Need a Backup Plan

Indoor pets live in a controlled environment, which makes an accidental escape more disorienting. A startled cat may hide silently for hours. A young dog may run farther than expected. Without reliable ID, even a friendly pet can remain unidentified.

A microchip provides a quiet, always-on link back home, regardless of where your pet is found.

Registration and Updates Matter

The chip works only when it is registered. Be sure to complete registration and keep your information up to date. If you move or change phone numbers, update the registry right away. Adding a secondary contact can also help if you are unreachable.

Affordable Protection That Lasts

Microchipping is a one-time, budget-friendly service with long-term impact. It can save time, reduce stress, and dramatically improve the chances of a quick reunion if your pet is ever lost.

If you’ve just welcomed a puppy or kitten, now is the perfect time to add microchipping to their care plan. At Low Cost Veterinary Surgery Center of Mesa, we focus on practical care that delivers real value. This small step builds a lasting safety net that travels with your pet for life.

We brought our 80-lb, 5-year-old Aussiedoodle in today for a sebaceous cyst removal — it was our first visit, and we were so impressed. The entire staff was professional, polite, and genuinely friendly from the moment we walked in.The doctor carefully evaluated the cyst, explained everything clearly, and provided a very fair quote for removal. She even offered a dental cleaning at an incredible price that was too good to pass up. We truly appreciated the transparency and lack of pressure. Our dog is unfortunately prone to cysts, but we feel lucky to have found a place we trust for future care. Thank you so much for seeing our sweet pup the same day — you all are amazing!

Granted, I did not have a pet undergoing surgery, just vaccines and a nail trim. These people seem to be offering an affordable option to what has become a ridiculously outrageous service. People are putting down pets simply because they can’t afford to keep their beloved pets healthy. Several feral cats were brought in for sterilization while I was there. I feel these people deserve business. Thank you for truly caring for our pets and not seeing them as an early retirement. God bless!

This is absolutely , hands down the best place to go to . RILEY has always been the one to answer my calls any time I contact them and lemme tell you. This girl is beyond wonderful. I was nervous bringing my baby as iv had bad experiences in the past going to different clinics but she was so sweet and welcoming. She answered all my questions and gave me extra helpful info . She always had a smile on regardless how early we went in . I can’t remember the second persons name that was there during pick up but she was also so sweet. Dr.B just so happened to be there during my pick up the first time around and is a remarkably benevolent soul. All around I’ve had nothing but great experiences coming here . The staff is wonderful , I can’t express it enough . I wish they were a full clinic so I could have them as our primary. Thank you all for what you do 💕
